Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease often associated with uncertainty or fear of things which could happen in the future. Persistent, nagging fear or worry about situations that are not threatening can have an undermining impact on health, happiness and the ability to cope with everyday life. People with anxiety disorders typically have recurring intrusive thoughts or concerns. They may avoid certain situations out of worry. They may also have physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, dizziness or a rapid heartbeat.
Anxiety is a normal and often healthy emotion, however, when a person regularly feels disproportionate levels of anxiety, it might become a medical disorder.
There are several types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobia, and separation anxiety disorder, among others. Each type of anxiety disorder has its own unique set of symptoms and can be treated with therapy, medication or a combination of both.
